googlewhacked!

August 22, 2005 – 4:38 pm

I found–nay, I created a googlewhack, and that googlewhack is me. I am prodigiously proud to blurt that the googlewhack “coining googlecentechelon” yields, this writing, exactly one result, and that result is chezJoel.com. And the icing on the cake is that my site is firmly ensconced in the Googlecentechelon for the both the phrase “coining googlecentechelon” and the word “Googlecentechelon” itself. Ah, sweet, sweet triumph.

  2. So then, if I now go and post all about how Joel was successful in coining googlecentechelon, I’ll show up as search result #2!

  3. you are…too much!
    you are…nuts!

you need a breath of fresh air.
you need a change of environment.
    you need…a life!

all of that - and much more - is ready and available in hoosier land … we’ll leave a light on for yuh!

  4. Diva: It’d no longer be a googlewack, but that’s ok. I’m not sure my googlewack actually qualifies as such; googlewack.com doesn’t allow made-up words in its wack stack, and “googlecentechelon” isn’t a word that their dictionary recognizes…yet. But by the time it is added to their dictionary (credit, no doubt, to hordes of insistent and erudite bloggers), many people will have written about the coining of Googlecentechelon, and the whack will have long since turned to googlejack.

The greater good and higher aim is getting “googlecentechelon” into 1st and 2nd grade English Vocabulary textbooks. Eye on the ball. So do, please blog about the coining of Googlecentechelon. In fact, for the remainder of ‘05, I’m waiving all royalties for the use of that word.

  6. I’ve heard googlewhacking yourself too much will make you go blind.

By Saint Kansas on Aug 24, 2005

  7. Yes, but is it a sin?

By Joel on Aug 24, 2005

  8. You are confused on the meaning of Googlecentechelon, I think. It is not just the first hit on Google or even a hit on Google, it is the tenth listing on the tenth page of a Google search. I think Googlecentechelon has a ways to go.

But I’m sure you’ll reach your goal, Joel.

Also, by crowing about your googlewhack, you ungooglewhack yourself… well, as soon as Google finds you, that is.

    By k_sra on Aug 25, 2005

  9. Actually the meaning of the term “Googlecentechelon” is any listing which appears anywhere in the first 10 pages of results, i.e. within the first 100 results for a given Google search.

I suppose its possible I might unwhack myself by bragging about it. However, on closer inspection of the rules, my whack may be vulnerable to attack and might not be worthy of the stack: you can’t have a Googlewhack which uses made-up words (i.e. both words in the whack have to have to appear in a certain publicly accessible online dictionary). And Googlecentechelon doesn’t…yet.

Sorry for any confusion: to sum up, my site is the only Google result for a phrase which refers to the creation of a word which refers to 100 Google results. No whacking, stacking, blindness or other unkindness was ever involved.

  10. You may have invented the word “Googlecentechelon”, but as a purist I must contend with your definition, since I came up with the original concept. Googlecentechelon is the one hundredth listing in any Google search. The first 99 and any after cannot be called a Googlecentechelon.

    By k_sra on Aug 26, 2005

  11. It’s ok, [k]. As the one who coined the prase “Googlecentecheal” (as in, a Googlecentecheal post) and “Googlecentechedom” (as in, achieving Googlecentechedom), I concur with the purist definition.

By Worldgineer on Aug 26, 2005

  12. Actually, here is the original use of the term:

//There should be a name for the tenth entry on the tenth page of Google, like “Googlecentechelon” as in, “Yay! My blog has now entered the Googlecentechelon for the phrase ‘armpit mole!’”

Just remember who came up with this: me. // -[Joel]

It appears that the purist definition is correct.

By Worldgineer on Aug 26, 2005

  13. World, I refer you to the reference to which you referred:

    //

//Just remember who came up with this: me. // -[Joel]

    //

Whatever I may have said in haste at the outset, I do insist that to be utterly pure, we must hold “Googlecentechelon” to mean a listing which appears in any of the first ten pages of Google results.

ech-e-lon: 1a) A formation of troops in which each unit is positioned successively to the left or right of the rear unit to form an oblique or steplike line. 1b) A flight formation or arrangement of craft in this manner. 1c) A similar formation of groups, units, or individuals.

    2) A subdivision of a military or naval force: a command echelon.

    3) A level of responsibility or authority in a hierarchy; a rank: a job in the company’s lower echelon.

It isn’t possible for a single thing among many to be “a” Googlecentechelon. The single thing among many may reside in a Googlecentechelon.

  14. I see your point, but the problem I have with this is your definition makes a Googlecentechelon kind of boring. Who cares if you’re just one of the hundred Googlecentecheloneers? No, we need a better concept - something unique and interesting. I guess we’ll have to make up a word to fit.

    I propose the term Googlecenturion.

  15. googlewhack, paddywack,
give the dog a bone [as a form of reward for effort as well as accompishment] - either that or get out the rolled-up newspaper and smack him across the snout so he’ll never do ‘that’ again.

where do you people find time to think like this … it is friday night and my mind is already mush - then i read this and am challenged to try making sense of that which isn’t sensible from the start.

i think it easier to discern the source and reality of the shadow on the wall [cave scene in the republic].

  16. // …your definition makes a Googlecentechelon kind of boring. Who cares if you’re just one of the hundred Googlecentecheloneers? //

Eskimos have sixteen different words for snow. Surely a right-minded left-coaster like you would agree that it’s nuance that makes the language fun.

For my part, words must not only be exciting, but meaningful as well. What, exactly does Googlecenturion mean?

I propose, for all of you obsessed with the 100th result, the word “Googlecentambit.” I’ll use it in a sentence, just this once: “ChezJoel.com, having tottered past the Googlecentambit, tripped and fell heavily upon the springy turf of the lower region of the Googlecentechelon, and lay gazing upward at a multi-colored banner which read, ‘much ado about Google.’”

  17. Century: A unit of the Roman army originally consisting of 100 men.

Centurion: The commander of a century in the Roman army.

Googlecenturion: As the 100th member, the commander of the top 100 results from a Google search.

By Worldgineer on Aug 29, 2005

  18. I like Googlecentambit as the one hundredth result on a Google search. I could go for that.

    By k_sra on Aug 30, 2005

  19. I like the sound, but what does it mean? Are you pulling the “ambit” from “gambit”, “ambitious”, or just “ambit” - meaning an area in which something acts or operates or has power or control?

By Worldgineer on Aug 30, 2005

  20. Now you’re just being ornery. First you complain of bordom, and now you’re the stickler for meaning. Very well...

    ambit \AM-bit\, noun:
    1. Circuit or compass.
    2. The boundaries or limits of a district or place.
    3. An area in which something acts, operates, or has power or control; extent; sphere; scope.

I, of course, intend the second of these three connotations. Thus, Googlecentambit refers to the boundary a result must cross to enter a Googlecentechelon.

By Joel on Aug 30, 2005

  21. Ok, that works for me. Shall we put this to a vote of the first Googlenominal Congress?

By Worldgineer on Aug 30, 2005

  22. If your word pulls 10 to the power of 100 results, it should be a googlegoogol.
