some say in ice
![]() |
We lost power. The lights flickered a few times, came back on, and then a half a minute later, everything went dark for good. My son and I played a quick couple of rounds of pictionary, and then I started to realize just how dark it was going to get tonight. And how cold.
I found that while each blade of grass was covered in glassy ice, the roads were not. So we piled into the car and went to Wal-Mart to buy candles, flashlights, and snack food. While driving around town, we saw to our dismay that the power outages were spotty, but plentiful. I figure this means our power will be out for a while.
We decided one good hot meal would be our first order of business, so we headed downtown to the Blue Bottle coffee shop, and found, to our delight, that they had power, and they were open. We had chili, tomato soup, and grilled chicken pita sandwiches. And coffee. And hot chocolate. And a cookie. And a Morning Glory muffin. And wireless internet access. Ahhhhh, that's nice. Nothing like access to the 'net during an ice storm to make you feel cozy.
Stay warm folks. Stay dry, and stay safe. Even if you can't stay online.

Bah. Safe and dry are no fun. Took a weekend trip sailing in the snow, and was rewarded with a bald eagle diving for fish, a seal following us throught the locks, sea lions lounging on buoys, and a pod of around 8-10 Orcas following our boat.
Though I do admit that once or twice I would have swapped it all for a cookie and cocoa in a warm place.

'Tis you that should stay warm and safe.
The forecast here if for 70 degrees or so tomorrow, it has been unbelievably balmy here ever since the holidays. It's also a bit scary because I have seen a few mosquitoes buzzing about and the spiders in the windows at work have not yet died. It we don't get a cold snap soon, who knows what deadly viruses we'll face this summer?

Crikey, it snowed in Williamsburg before Christmas, didn't you get any of that?

No, amazingly we didn't. In Newport News they got a foot of snow, on one side of Williamsburg they got snow and on the other side of Williamsburg they got nothing. We got nothing, although it was indeed colder here then. We're supposed to have 2 days of 70 degree weather and then colder this weekend, so we'll see. Hopefully we won't pay for it later, but we do need a bit of an extended period of cold. The plants are starting to bud already, geez.
